UPPER SCHOOL OVERVIEW

The Upper School Division is a five year academic experience for 4th-8th grades that includes the Upper Elementary and Middle School programs. Taking into account the developing needs of adolescents, Upper School students are met with the ideal combination of academic rigor and personalized support to ensure the success of every learner. Our students are uniquely prepared to continue their education journey as our comprehensive curriculum focuses on developing independence in learning through in depth studies. Whether investigating advanced science labs, debating the influence of history on our society, performing in the black box theater or practicing Chinese characters, students are engaged and inspired through unique learning experiences. We build lifelong learners who think, create and innovate; we build the future leaders of our community and world.

Upper Elementary Overview

The Upper Elementary program is a two-year program designed to transition students from the Montessori classroom to the innovative, progressive education in the Upper School. Teaching and learning strategies are designed to ensure all students master the essential learning outcomes. These include best practices from Orton Gillingham and Montessori pedagogy, providing personalized learning opportunities to best meet the needs of all students, and providing appropriate, immediate intervention and enrichment in the core subject areas. In understanding the unique developmental stage of this age group, social-emotional learning is infused in the curriculum, fostering the growth of the

whole child.

Middle School Overview

The Middle School program is distinguished by unique and experiential programs such as animal science, multiple world languages, international travel, advanced scientific inquiry, computer programming and a focus on the arts. Seminar-style classes employ inquiry methods for the in depth exploration of literature, language, critical and creative writing, history, geography, current events and more. Students can study high-level Algebra and Geometry using concrete examples and real-world problems to understand abstract math concepts. The advanced, comprehensive curriculum combined with innovation in teaching creates the optimum learning environment for students to prepare for high school. Middle School graduates are able to leave with multiple high school credits, all while being nurtured through the many challenges of adolescence.
